Maternity Photography FAQs

FAQs
The answers to your questions
When should I book my maternity photoshoot?
I recommend booking your maternity session during your second trimester to ensure availability, as bookings are limited each month.

Maternity sessions are ideally photographed between 28–35 weeks when your belly is beautifully round, but you are still comfortable enough to move and pose during your session.

If you are expecting twins or have a high-risk pregnancy, I may recommend photographing earlier.
What is the best week for maternity photos?
The best time for maternity photos is usually between 28–35 weeks pregnant.

This stage is perfect because your bump is nicely visible while you are typically still feeling comfortable enough for posing, outfit changes, and movement during your session.

Can I do maternity photos at 36 weeks?
Yes — many mums still book maternity photos around 36 weeks, however earlier is usually recommended where possible.

Every pregnancy is different, so comfort and mobility can vary. If you are unsure, feel free to reach out and I can help recommend the best timing for your session.
Do you offer studio maternity photography in Melbourne?
Yes — I specialise in elegant in-studio maternity photography in Melbourne from my cozy home studio located in Point Cook.

My studio is designed specifically for maternity and newborn sessions, offering a relaxed and private experience with professional lighting, beautiful gowns, and guided posing throughout your session.

I photograph both light and airy maternity portraits as well as dramatic and artistic maternity images.
What type of maternity photos can I get?
I offer a range of maternity photography styles to suit your vision and comfort level, including:

Light and airy maternity photography
Fine art maternity portraits
Dramatic studio maternity images
Minimalist maternity portraits
Wet theme maternity sessions
Boudoir maternity photography
Family maternity portraits with partners and children

Every session is tailored to create elegant and timeless images while still feeling natural and authentic to you.
Are maternity dresses included?
Yes — access to my client wardrobe is included with your maternity session.

I have a growing collection of maternity gowns, fabrics, bodysuits, and styling pieces available for clients to use during their session.

Depending on your chosen package, multiple dress changes are included. You are also welcome to bring your own outfits if you would like a more personal look included in your gallery.
What should I wear for my maternity photoshoot?
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a preparation guide with tips on what to wear and how to prepare for your session.

Neutral tones, soft fabrics, fitted dresses, bodysuits, and flowing gowns photograph beautifully for maternity portraits. I always recommend avoiding busy patterns or large logos to keep the focus on you and your bump.

Many clients choose a combination of studio gowns and their own personal outfits during their session.
What colours are best for maternity photos?
Neutral and earthy tones photograph beautifully for maternity sessions and help create timeless images.

Whites, creams, beige, black, soft browns, and muted tones work especially well in my studio style. Soft textures and flowing fabrics also photograph beautifully under studio lighting.
What should dads wear for maternity photos?
Simple and neutral outfits work best for partners during maternity sessions.

I recommend plain fitted shirts or neutral-toned clothing without large logos or bright patterns. Keeping outfits simple helps keep the focus on the connection and emotion within your images.
What should kids wear for maternity photos?
Neutral colours and simple outfits photograph beautifully for sibling images during your maternity session.

Soft tones, textures, and clothing without large logos or bright patterns help create timeless family portraits that match the overall look of the session.
Can my partner or children be included in the session?
Absolutely. Partners and siblings are welcome to be included in your maternity session.

These images often become some of the most meaningful photographs from your session and help capture this special season for your entire family.

Due to the size of my studio, sessions are limited to parents and siblings only.
How long does a maternity photoshoot take?
Session length depends on your chosen package and the number of outfit changes included.

Most maternity sessions take between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, allowing time for styling, posing, outfit changes, and a variety of setups during your session.
What if I feel awkward or nervous in front of the camera?
Please don’t worry — most of my clients say this before their session.

You do not need any modelling experience at all. I will guide you through posing, hand placement, angles, expression, and movement throughout the session to create flattering and natural-looking images.

My goal is to make you feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful during your maternity session.
How do you pose for maternity photos?
Every maternity session is fully guided.

I will direct you throughout the session using flattering poses, lighting, and angles designed specifically for maternity photography. This helps create elegant images while still keeping everything relaxed and natural.
Do you offer professional hair and makeup for maternity photos?
Yes — professional hair and makeup can be arranged for your maternity session.

Hair and makeup is completed by Glamorous Armani at her home studio located just a few minutes from my studio, making the process easy and convenient before your session.

Professional makeup photographs beautifully on camera and helps complete the overall maternity experience.

What is a wet theme maternity session?
A wet theme maternity session is a dramatic fine art add-on that creates a soft, wet-look effect using water spray and flowing fabrics.

These sessions are designed to create artistic, powerful, and unique maternity portraits with beautiful texture and movement.

Wet theme sessions are completed in-studio and are available as an optional add-on to your maternity session.
Do you offer boudoir maternity photography?
Yes — I offer tasteful boudoir maternity add-ons for clients wanting a more intimate and artistic style of maternity portraits.

Boudoir maternity sessions focus on confidence, femininity, and celebrating your changing body in an elegant and empowering way.

These images can be photographed using soft lighting, dramatic shadows, fabrics, bodysuits, or implied nude styling depending on your comfort level.
Can you do nude maternity photos?
Yes — tasteful implied nude maternity portraits can be included if requested.

These images are photographed artistically using posing, lighting, fabrics, and shadows to create elegant and timeless maternity portraits while ensuring you feel comfortable and confident throughout the session.
Are maternity photos worth it?
Maternity photos capture a moment in time that passes incredibly quickly.

Many clients initially feel unsure about booking a session, but later say they are so grateful they documented this special season before their baby arrived.

These images become meaningful memories not only for you, but also for your children in the future.
Do maternity photographers edit photos?
Yes — all selected images are professionally edited in my signature style.

Editing includes colour correction, skin retouching, lighting adjustments, and artistic finishing touches while still keeping your images natural and timeless.
Do you provide RAW images?
No — RAW files are not included or provided.

RAW images are unfinished files straight from the camera and do not reflect the final quality or artistic editing style that Renee V Photography is known for.

Every final image is carefully hand-edited to create the polished artwork seen throughout my portfolio.
How long does it take to receive maternity photos?
Turnaround times can vary slightly throughout the year, however most maternity galleries are ready within a few weeks after your session.

You will receive your gallery online where you can select your included images and purchase any additional images or products if desired.
