Bringing a new baby into the world is one of the most special and fleeting experiences of your life - and many parents want to remember those tiny details forever. But if you’ve found yourself wondering, “When should we take newborn photos?” - you’re not alone. As a professional newborn photographer based in Point Cook, Melbourne, I’m here to answer that question and help you plan for the most beautiful, stress-free experience possible.
🍼 The Ideal Window: 4–12 Days Old
The best time to take newborn photos is within the first 4–12 days after birth.
During this short window:
Babies are sleepier and more settled
Their bodies naturally curl into those sweet womb-like poses
They’re less prone to baby acne or overstimulation
Feeding and routines are still flexible, allowing for a calmer session
🤍 What If My Baby Is Older?
Life doesn’t always go to plan (especially with newborns!). If your baby is outside the 12-day window, don’t stress - we can still create beautiful images.
After the 2-week mark, babies may be more alert, but we can focus on natural, wrapped poses or lifestyle-style shots that highlight connection and expression.
Twins or Multiple Babies?
If you’re expecting multiples, you might find that your bump grows much earlier than it would in a singleton pregnancy. Many mothers expecting twins or triplets find that they are ready to capture their maternity photos closer to 28-32 weeks. At this point, your bump will be more prominent, and you'll have that wonderful glow-plus, your body may start to feel the physical demands of carrying multiples sooner, making it wise to schedule your session earlier in your pregnancy.
📅 When Should You Book?
During your pregnancy is the best time to book your newborn session. I only take on a limited number of due dates each month to allow flexibility for early, late, or on-time arrivals. Booking ahead secures your spot and allows us to tentatively plan around your due date.
If you wait until after your baby arrives, I may already be fully booked - and I hate having to turn anyone away during that precious newborn window!
